Women’s Healthcare in Albania: Gynecologists, Mammograms, HRT and Costs

Reading Time: 6 minutes

Private women’s healthcare in Albania is usually easy to access and much cheaper than in the US. You can book a gynecologist, mammogram, ultrasound or blood test without waiting for a referral.

The main challenge is knowing where to go, what the price includes and which medications are available.

Finding an English-Speaking Gynecologist

Most expat women use private hospitals or clinics. Tirana has the widest choice of specialists, but routine appointments are also available in Vlorë, Sarandë and Durrës.

A private gynecologist appointment generally costs:

  • 3,300 to 6,500 LEK ($41 to $81) at a major private hospital
  • Around 3,000 LEK ($37) at some smaller local clinics

The main private hospitals in Tirana include:

All three have obstetrics and gynecology departments. Hygeia specifically lists routine exams, pregnancy care and menopause management among its services.

In Vlorë, women can also use smaller private gynecology and diagnostic clinics. Gega Diagnostic Clinic offers imaging and laboratory services, including digital mammography.

When booking, ask:

  • Does the doctor speak English?
  • Can I request a female doctor?
  • Is an ultrasound included?
  • Can the Pap test be done during the same visit?
  • What is the full price?

If you’re still figuring out the Albanian medical system, my healthcare guide for expats explains how appointments, payments and prescriptions generally work.

Mammograms and Breast Ultrasounds

You can use either the public or private system.

Public hospitals may provide free mammograms to registered residents, but equipment and appointment availability vary outside Tirana. Women in Sarandë reported waiting around three years for a mammography machine to arrive at the local public hospital.

For that reason, many expats simply pay for private screening.

A private mammogram or breast ultrasound usually costs around:

  • 2,000 to 4,500 LEK ($25 to $56)

Appointments are normally easy to arrange, and some clinics can see you within a few days.

Ask for:

  • The written radiology report
  • The original image files
  • Instructions for accessing the images online
  • An English version of the report, if available

Having the original files makes it easier to send everything to a doctor in the United States for a second opinion.

Pap Tests and Lab Work

Private laboratories usually let you book directly. Blood results may arrive the same day or the next morning, while Pap and HPV results can take longer.

Pap tests and basic blood panels generally cost:

  • 1,500 to 4,000 LEK ($19 to $50)

GeniusLAB is one of the larger private laboratory networks in Albania and offers blood, hormonal, microbiological and other diagnostic testing.

Menopause Care and HRT

Menopause care is available in Albania, with several options in Tirana. Hygeia Hospital offers menopause-related care, while newer longevity clinics such as Elixence and Gremi Longevity Center advertise hormone-focused services. If you’re considering HRT, ask specifically about menopause treatment and the formulations they prescribe, since not every hormone program is designed for women’s menopause care.

If you already use HRT, bring a photo of your medication box, your prescription, and a list of your other medications. Make sure the photo clearly shows the active ingredient, strength, and dosage instructions.

Where to Find HRT in Albania

Hormone replacement therapy is available in Albania, but finding your exact formulation can take some detective work. Tirana offers more options than smaller cities, and certain products may need to be ordered from abroad.

Here’s where to start:

  • Estradiol patches: Try asking FarmaBlend or Farmacia Greke about availability or special orders. Some pharmacies can source patches from Greece or Italy. Bring a photo of your current box showing the brand, strength, and dosing schedule.
  • Estradiol cream: Qeliza Aesthetics advertises compounded estrogen cream in Tirana. GoldFarmaci is another possible contact for products ordered from Greece. Confirm whether you need vaginal estrogen or a systemic treatment, since these are not interchangeable.
  • Progesterone capsules: Oral and vaginal progesterone is generally easier to find. Ask about Utrogestan or Prometrium, commonly sold in 100 mg and 200 mg strengths.
  • Testosterone gel: Testogel has been reported at BioFarma, while GoldFarmaci may be able to source it from Greece. Availability and prescription requirements should be confirmed directly.

If you’re struggling to find a treatment, you can also ask an endocrinologist at Spitali Amerikan about appropriate alternatives and prescriptions.

Important: Don’t switch hormone formulations, strengths, or dosing schedules without medical guidance. Compounded products may also differ from commercially manufactured treatments.

Check Your Medication Before Traveling

If you take a prescription medication regularly, search for its active ingredient, not just its American brand name. Albania’s National Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices publishes an official Register of Medicines. It’s a useful starting point for checking which products are registered in the country.

Looking for vitamins or supplements?

Basic products are available at pharmacies and Rossmann, while specialty or imported brands can cost considerably more. You can also check GNC Albania and iHerb for specific products.

UTIs: What to Ask for at an Albanian Pharmacy

If you develop a urinary tract infection while in Albania, a local pharmacy may be able to help you find the medication prescribed by your doctor.

Names worth knowing include:

  • Nitrofurantoin (Macrobid): Available at some Albanian pharmacies.
  • Fosfomycin: Often sold as a powder or granules in a sachet. Registered brand names include Uroday, Cystosanit, Fosuril, and Urocare.
  • Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim): May be available under the brand name or as a generic equivalent.
  • Phenazopyridine (Pyridium): Used for urinary discomfort, but it does not treat the infection itself.

These medications aren’t interchangeable, and not every case of urinary discomfort is a UTI. A clinician can determine whether testing or antibiotics are appropriate.

If you have a fever, flank pain, vomiting, are pregnant, or feel seriously unwell, seek prompt medical care rather than relying on pharmacy advice alone.

Women’s Checkup Packages

Money Saving Tip

Private hospitals sometimes bundle several women’s health tests into 1 discounted package. These can cost much less than booking every test separately.

For example, Hygeia Hospital Tirana has advertised a women’s general checkup package for 12,000 LEK, about $149.

Complete blood count Urine test Lipid panel Liver function tests Kidney function tests Blood sugar Thyroid test Pap test Sedimentation rate ECG Abdominal ultrasound

These offers are temporary and can change. Check the hospital’s website or social media, or call before booking to ask about current women’s wellness packages.

Does Health Insurance Cover Women’s Healthcare?

Some Albanian and international insurance plans cover specialist appointments, testing and hospital treatment. Others require you to pay first and submit a claim later.

Ask whether your policy covers:

  • Routine gynecology appointments
  • Pap and HPV testing
  • Mammograms
  • Breast ultrasounds
  • Hormone testing
  • HRT consultations
  • Prescription medication

Can You Use an Online Doctor?

An online appointment can be useful for discussing test results, renewing an existing treatment plan or getting advice before traveling to Tirana. It’s not a replacement for a physical exam, Pap test, mammogram or breast ultrasound.

My online doctors in Albania guide covers the main options and when telemedicine is actually useful.

The Bottom Line

Private women’s healthcare in Albania is generally affordable and easy to book. Routine gynecology appointments, Pap tests, mammograms and blood work are available without spending hundreds of dollars.

Specialized menopause care and specific HRT products may take more searching, particularly outside Tirana. Bring your existing medication information, ask direct questions and keep copies of your medical records.

Before Your Appointment

A Few Useful Tips

✓

Bring your passport or Albanian ID, previous test results and a list of your medications.

✓

Request a female doctor when booking, not after you arrive.

✓

Save digital copies of every report and scan. Medical systems don’t always share records with one another.

✓

Confirm whether the consultation price includes an ultrasound or other testing.

✓

If your Albanian is limited, keep Google Translate ready for reception staff, even if the doctor speaks English.

!

Don’t wait for Facebook advice. Contact a doctor if you have unusual bleeding, severe pelvic pain, a breast lump or anything that feels urgent.
