So, you’ve signed the lease, the sea view is incredible, and you’re ready to start your new life in Albania. But then the sun goes down, you try to turn on the lights, and… nothing. Or perhaps you’re staring at a stack of utility booklets in Albanian, wondering how on earth you’re supposed to pay them without a local bank account.
Setting up a household in Albania is a bit of a choose your own adventure game. Things here operate on a logic that’s all their own. One day you have water but no power; the next, it’s the other way around. But don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. Here’s your guide to managing your Albanian home like a pro.

Paying Bills
For a long time, paying for water and electricity meant waiting in long lines at a physical office. Thankfully, we’ve moved into the digital age. Most expats now use the EasyPay app or the Union Bank app to handle utilities.
The Local Hack: The physical EasyPay locations might tell you that you can’t pay online, but you absolutely can. You’ll need to download the app and add money to your account. To get started, you’ll need the contact/contract numbers for your water and electric meters, which are usually found in your utility booklet or on a previous receipt.
Utility payments are one of many reasons the country still runs on cash. Here’s why you still need cash in Albania.
The “One Utility at a Time” Rule
In Albania there’s an unofficial running joke that you can have water, electricity, or internet, but rarely all 3 at once for 24 hours straight. Infrastructure upgrades are common, and planned outages can last anywhere from a few hours to several days.
Outage Survival Kit:
- Buckets: When you hear the water pipes making a hissing sound, it often means a cut is coming. Fill your jugs and even your bathtub if you have to.
- UPS: Power surges and cuts are real. Invest in a UPS (Uninterrupted Power System) for your computer. You can find them at electronic shops like AZA for a decent price. Just remember to ask for one that doesn’t beep constantly during a blackout!
- Backup Data: If the power goes out, your home WiFi goes with it.
- Rechargeable batteries: JYSK stocks rechargeable AA and AAA batteries, which can save money if you regularly use battery-powered lights or other outage supplies. For inexpensive standard batteries, Jumbo is usually one of the cheaper places to check.
Stay Connected: I always keep a just in case eSIM from Airalo on my phone. If my internet goes down during a meeting, I switch to cellular data.
Fixing Slow Wifi
If your connection slows dramatically as you move away from the main router, the problem may be your home network rather than the internet service itself. A local networking specialist can install a mesh system or wired access points to improve coverage without the speed loss caused by poorly positioned repeaters.
A router-level VPN can protect or reroute traffic across the whole home, but it will not make a slow connection faster and may reduce speed. Treat the VPN and the Wi-Fi coverage setup as two separate jobs.
Hard Water and Gnarly Drains
Albania’s water is very high in mineral content. This means your tea kettle will look like it’s growing white scales within a month. If you don’t want to rely on bottled water, a reverse-osmosis system is another option. Ecosoft Albania sells and services under-sink filtration systems, including installation and replacement filters.
As of 2026, some of their rental/service arrangements cost around €15 per month when paid annually, but plans and installation requirements can change. Ask Ecosoft for a current written quote and confirm exactly what maintenance and filter replacements are included.
